Grand Council Treaty #3 is the historic government of the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3 and is the political government for the 28 First Nations in the treaty area.  There has been significant movement over the years back towards Anishinaabe Nationhood by the member communities.  This is despite the efforts of the settler government to assimilate our communities and especially, our children through the Indian Residential School System.  The treaty area includes 26 First Nations in Northwestern Ontario and 2 First Nations in Manitoba.

During the recent National Assemblies, from May 19-21, 2009 and a Chiefs Assembly on January 28-29, 2009 there were several resolutions passed by the Chiefs in Assembly.  Many related to our inherent and treaty rights.   In addition, Minister Brad Duguid of the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs made his first visit to an Aboriginal community in his new portfolio during our Fall Assembly of October 8-10, 2008.  He returned on May 20, 2009 to sign a bilateral agreement and commit the Province of Ontario to work with GCT3 on three priorities issues: children and youth issues, economic sustainability and education.  Minister Chris Bentley, the successor of Duguid’s relationship building efforts, has met with Ogichidaakwe on several occasions, including the Fall Assembly of October 2010.
